U-High Fall Break

Enjoy the extended weekend ... No School on Monday, October 14, in honor of the Columbus Day holiday and No School on Tuesday, October 15, to allow our teachers to participate in a day of professional development.

Ch 1 Test - Retake

We have informed students of the procedures for completing the Ch. 1 Test retake.

- The retake will be completed as a take home test.  The retake is due to me at the start of the student's Geometry class on Wed, Oct. 16.

- The student's grade on the retake will be reduced by 5% for each day the test is late.

- As this is a take home test, students are allowed to use their notes, their textbook, and their school provided computers.  THEY MAY NOT RECEIVE ASSISTANCE FROM ANY HUMAN!

- If students have questions, they should contact me via e-mail at masondg@ilstu.edu.

- If a student is interested in retaking the Ch 1 Test but failed to pick up a copy of the retake from me on Friday, they should email me at the above address and I will send them a copy.  Regardless of when the student receives the retake, it is due at the start of class on Wed, Oct. 16.

Note:  Unlike the retake policy employed by the Freshmen Block teachers, I do NOT place a limit on the number of summative assessments that a student may retake.  I will base that decision on the student's effort on the material being assessed.  If the student has attempted all of the associated HW assignments prior to that assessment and has been an active participant in the classroom discussions involving the assessed topics, then I will generally allow them to retake as many assessments as necessary to demonstrate an acceptable understanding of the concepts being assessed.

Note about Grades ... for Parents

Please bear with us as we move to a new standards-based grade book.  We are working to develop a system that will better communicate to you how your student is performing in the Geometry classroom.  We hope to have many of the bugs worked out by the first week of September.  Until that time, feel free to e-mail me with any questions you might have about your child's grade.

As of Friday, August 30, we should have 2 formative assessments entered into the grade book ... a Quick Quiz for Sec. 1.1 (out of 5 points) and a Quick Quiz for Sec. 1.2 (out of 5 points). Please understand that the primary purpose of my formative assessments is to give students quick feedback on their understanding of basic concepts as they move through the chapter.  They are not designed to have a major effect on the students' semester grade, as each one accounts for a nominal percentage of the semester grade.

Our first semi-summative assessment ... a Mid-Chapter Quiz covering Sec. 1.1, 1,2 and 1.6 ... is scheduled for next Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Internet Issues ...

... it appears that we are still having internet issues with the U-High netbooks.  Apparently, students can access the internet only when connected to the ISU network (at school or on the ISU campus).  When you try to connect from a internet provider other than ISU, you are blocked from any page other than the U-High homepage and possibly Blackboard.  You should, however, be able to access the online textbook from your home computer, etc.

I will attempt to correct this issue in the next hour or so.  Please check back after 6:00 pm to see if we have been able to correct the problem.

- Complete pgs. 457-459   #1-11, #14-16, #44-47

Modern Math - We continued our discussions of Ch. 8, focusing on the inclusion of independent events in the scheduling process (8.7).  HW for Wednesday - Read Sec. 8.7.

Absences ...

A quick reminder to my students ... being absent the day BEFORE a test does not excuse you from taking the test on the assigned day.  Chapter tests are announced at least 2 days ahead of time both in class on on the HW blog.  In nearly every case, we spend the day before in class reviewing for the test.  If you are absent, you should still be able to review on your own ... take the online interactive practice tests/quizzes, review old quizzes from the chapter, etc.

If you miss the day before a test and you do not feel prepared to take the test in class the day you return, you need to be prepared to take the test at one of the following times ...
- free hour or after school later that day
- in class the next day
- free hour or after school the next day

The longer it takes you to make up the test, the longer I have to wait to return the graded tests to everyone else in the class.
